Chapter Nine
Henryâs interview lasted the better part of the afternoon. When Colette first mentioned that she wanted to include a profile of him in the honeymoon pull-out section of the June issue, heâd hoped she might give the assignment to Everly.
No such luck. Colette wanted to write the piece herself, and even if she hadnât, Everly had apparently been banished to some weird form of wedding reporter exile, where she was expected to write about absurd things like dog weddings.
He still wasnât altogether sure she hadnât been pulling his leg. Henry fully believed the reason Everlyâs cubicle sat empty when he emerged from Coletteâs office was because Everly was sitting in the front row of a bridal fashion show somewhere. He could picture her perched on the edge of her seat, back as straight and supple as a ballerinaâs and feet crossed primly at the ankles. Everly had always carried herself with a natural grace that made her appear as though sheâd been to charm school. Men typically loved it. It drove them mad, which in turn, drove Henry mad. Even after heâd taken up permanent residence in the friend zone, heâd always felt overly protective of Everly when she captured a manâs attention.
Or maybe you were just jealous all along, you fool.
Henry tugged at the knot in his tie. He needed to stop thinking about Everlyâs empty cubicle and get to work. Being tied up in the interview all day meant his inbox was overflowing with emails, and he still needed to choose the top ten honeymoon locations he wanted to feature in the issue. The last time heâd taken a crack at the list, heâd been unable to narrow it down below nineteen breathtaking vacation spots. Once he selected the locations, heâd need to pull photos from his various trips for Wanderlust and do a write-up for each. And all of that was on top of editing the issueâs other honeymoon-related content.
Henry didnât need to be mooning over his best friend. He needed quality time at his desk, and he needed caffeine. Lots of it.
He strode through the Veil lobby en route to the break room, home to a European espresso machine most often frequented by Henry and Addison. But as he passed the reception desk, he overheard a snippet of conversation that gave him pause.
âLet me make sure Iâm understanding you correctly.â Ivy, the receptionist, grimaced into her phone. âOne of our reporters is being accused of...dognapping?â
Henryâs footsteps slowed. He felt himself frown as he turned back toward Ivyâs desk.
âYes, that does sound like a problem,â Ivy said, nodding at whatever the person on the other end of the line was saying. âApologies on behalf of Veil. Perhaps our editor in chiefââ
Henry cleared his throat. âIvy, letâs not bother Colette with this.â
The receptionist glanced up at him, relief etched in her features. âHold just one second, please,â she said into the phone.
Henry flashed her a wink and held out his hand. âGive it to me. I can handle whatever this is.
